News update: health officials are scheduled to announce the result of the first phase of their investigation into a possible cancer cluster in the Acreage on Thursday, August 27, 2008.
The results will indicate whether there are unusual levels of cancer and whether there will there be additional phases to the investigation.
The results will be announced at a 3 p.m. news conference at county health headquarters in West Palm Beach. The annoucement will be open to the public, according to the Palm Beach Post.
Florida Department of Environmental Protection scientists will continue an ongoing analysis of well water in the area. Results from samples of about 50 wells in The Acreage area are due by late September, the Post reported.
Thursday night, our firm's lawyers will speak at a public forum and discuss whether the cancers in the Acreage might be connected to environmental causes.
Many Acreage residents are worried that the 7,000-acre Pratt & Whitney jet engine plant several miles away and/or citrus groves in the area, which used potentially dangerous pesticides for decades, may have tainted well water. There were also concerns about soil contamination.
