In recent news about mesothelioma cancer and related lawsuits, a man died after being exposed to asbestos while working at a prison and during his time in the Navy.
The Navy veteran, who was 81, died in December last year, after developing cancer caused by exposure to asbestos fibers.
He had first been diagnosed with asbestosis.
He had visited an asbestos cancer lawyer and made a statement about his working life, as he hoped to file a lawsuit to obtain compensation, but his condition deteriorated and he died before he was able to file a mesothelioma claim.
The statement which he had prepared, submitted by his lawyers, was read in court.
He said that he had enlisted with the Navy from 1947 to 1949, as a stoker.
In 1961 he had gone to work at a prison as a boiler man. In both jobs, he said, he was exposed to asbestos.
"Nobody seemed concerned about the threat of asbestos cancers at the time," he said. "I never complained to my employers, as I did not know that there was a health risk.
"I was simply told to do what I did."
A post-mortem examination found that the cause of death was mesothelioma cancer due to asbestosis.
