Blood Cancer Cluster Found in Pocono Mountains Area of PA
According to a report in the February 2009 issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, researchers may have found a potential link between environmental contamination in the eastern portion of Pennsylvania near the Pocono Mountains and the number of cases of a rare type of blood cancer. The blood cancer, known as polycythemia vera, has been identified in Tamaqua, a town located near Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, PA. While the area is known for coal production, there are also several power plants and Superfund sites in the region.
Researchers used a molecular diagnostic test to confirm a large number of patients with polycythemia vera within close proximity to known areas of hazardous waste material. They discovered the incidence of blood cancer was 4.3 times more likely in patients living near hazardous waste material sites than for other patients in the study.
