Study shows carpenters are at high risk for mesothelioma

The British Journal of Cancer has found that 1 in 17 British carpenters born in the 1940s will die of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos.

The risk of developing mesothelioma for other workers who are exposed to asbestos at work e.g., plumbers, electricians and decorators is about 1 in 50. The risk for construction workers is 1 in 125. The study also found that those who lived with someone who had been exposed to asbestos were at higher risk for mesothelioma.
