The British Journal of Cancer has found that 1 in 17 British carpenters born in the 1940s will die of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos.
The risk of developing mesothelioma for other workers who are exposed to asbestos at work e.g., plumbers, electricians and decorators is about 1 in 50. The risk for construction workers is 1 in 125. The study also found that those who lived with someone who had been exposed to asbestos were at higher risk for mesothelioma. The risk of mesothelioma for those in the U.K. who have not had occupational asbestos exposure was determined to be 1 in 1,000.
