April 15, 2010 - Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of malignant mesothelioma, a particularly deadly cancer that is diagnosed in some 3,000 workers every year in the United States.

And while most cases are linked to work-site asbestos exposure, asbestos secondhand exposure has also been traced as a cause of mesothelioma.

Medical experts have diagnosed asbestos-related diseases in family members of workers who carried home asbestos dust on their work clothes. Just the repeated act of laundering dusty work clothes is known to be a cause of mesothelioma.

Indeed, thousands of family members (notably workers’ wives and daughters who have never set foot on an asbestos-laden site) have sadly perished from mesothelioma cancer in just this way.

Studies show that mesothelioma is three times more common in men than women, but this is thought to be due to first-hand asbestos exposure, not simply to gender.
