CAUSES OF MESOTHELIOMA
Asbestos exposure causes mesothelioma
Occupational exposure to asbestos causes mesothelioma cancer. Of all U.S. industrial occupations, the most high-risk occupations for asbestos exposure include: pipefitter, insulation, boiler tender, construction and demolition.
Mesothelioma cancer is a rare disease that can occur in the thin membrane lining of the lungs, chest, abdomen, or heart.
According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), some 3,000 cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in the United States every year.
According to the NCI, about 2 percent of all miners and textile workers who work with asbestos develop mesothelioma.
Workers who toiled in asbestos mines, asbestos mills and factories, and shipyards, as well as those who manufacture and install asbestos insulation, have an increased risk of mesothelioma.
This is also the case for those who live with asbestos workers, near asbestos mining areas, near asbestos product factories or near shipyards, where abundant use of asbestos has emitted large quantities of airborne asbestos fibers.
The NCI says that the younger people are when they inhale asbestos fibers and dust, the more likely they are to contract mesothelioma cancer.
