Celebrex Side Effects: Heart Attack

Celebrex has been known to cause heart attacks. This is usually the result of a blood clot that forms from celebrex use.

A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to the heart is ceased due to the coronary artery being completely blocked by a blood clot.

The blockage is most often the result of atherosclerosis (the buildup of plaque against the arterial wall), where the plaque ruptures and then creates an opening for the activation for platelet accumulation (blood clot).

When the blood supply is decreased for more than a few minutes, cells may be permanently injured causing debilitating effects (i.e. heart failure and ventricular fibrillation) and if left untreated for more than 6-8 hours the heart muscle will die.

It is important to recognize the signs of a heart attack and respond immediately because time is a crucial factor for risk of disability.

Warning Signs: not all heart attacks are sudden. On the contrary, they occur slowly at first with mild pain or discomfort. Some tell tale signs are:

• Chest discomfort usually occurs in the center of the chest and lasts for longer than a few minutes and at times repeatedly.
• Upper body pain or discomfort in one or both of the arms, neck, jaw or stomach.
• Shortness of breath may occur before and in addition to chest discomfort.
• Cold sweats
• Nausea
• Light-headedness
