Celebrex Side Effects: Coronary Heart Disease
Coronary Heart Disease is also called Coronary Artery Disease and is a
condition in which arteries are narrowed and this decreases the amount of
necessary blood and oxygen to the heart.
This can lead to an angina, ischemia, or heart attack.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are prescribed to patients who
suffer from arthritis and pain where the most dominant adverse side effect is
gastrointestinal toxicity.
NSAIDs work by blocking both COX-1 (maintains
homeostasis in the stomach, kidney, and GI tract) and COX-2 (pain and
inflammation) enzymes.
The degree to which each enzyme is blocked depends
on the chemical composition of each NSAID.
The most often occurring
adverse effect from these non-selective NSAIDs occurs within a patient’s
gastrointestinal tract.
COX-2 selective NSAIDs are believed to have an improved overall safety
profile because it is hypothesized that they only target COX-2 enzymes for
greater efficiency in managing patient inflammation and pain.
However,
concerns have been raised about the increased risk of cardiovascular side
effects (i.e. heart attack and stroke).
The VIGOR (Vioxx GI Clinical
outcomes Research) study showed serious cardiovascular adverse events may occur
as soon as 4 months after chronic use.
