Chromium in Hanford, WA - Department of Ecology Issues Notice of Violation for Hanford Subcontractor Work
September 20, 2006
Hanford - According to KNDO.com, "The U.S.
Department of Energy is being criticized for it's handling of a chemical spill
at Hanford.
"The Washington Department of Ecology is issuing a Notice of
Violation after they said workers for a Washington Closure Hanford subcontractor
reportedly spilled 33 gallons of hexavalent chromium during cleanup work on the
100-D Reactor."
Although all of the workers involved are okay, the spill
is nevertheless dangerous. The Department of Ecology claims the contractor is at
fault for the spill, explaining that the proper samples were not taken in the
area before the work started.
The chromium was used years earlier to help
maintain the reactor's cooling system before it shut down in 1967.
