Chromium in Spring Lake - Factory site contamination worse than thought
September 30, 2006
Spring Lake - Construction of the Mill Point
Station, site of the former Miller-Smith factory, is temporarily delayed after
the discovery of chromium under slabs of concrete.
It is fairly common
for chromium to be found in abandoned industrial sites.
The area of
construction is a brownfield, an area known to have previously been a toxic
site. The cost for the project, initally at $170,000 will now be significantly
higher, due to the need to haul the concret away to a nearby hazardous waste
site.
