Getting Big Industry to Take Responsibility for Mother Earth

New York, NY -- Manhattan law firm Weitz and Luxenberg is working to hold industrial corporations responsible for some of the worst injuries to people, property, and our environment from contaminants such as Chromium, Lead Paint, MTBE, and industrial solvents such as PCE and TCE.

With Earth Day celebrations taking place nationwide on April 22nd, 2005, environmentalism will be on the forefront of the American consciousness. As a nation America has made great strides in combating the many forces which work to harm our environment, but there are still many more which have yet to be contended with. Weitz and Luxenberg is working to hold corporations responsible for some of the worst environmental hazards, including Chromium, Lead Paint and MTBE contamination.

Chromium is a carcinogenic, tasteless, odorless chemical that is associated with industrial waste from metal plating operations and other manufacturing concerns. Chromium has been linked to cancer and other serious health problems through inhalation, ingestion, and contact. Lead Poisoning is an environmental hazard which affects Approximately 434,000 U.S. children aged 1-5 years. The major source of lead exposure among U.S. children is lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust found in deteriorating buildings. Lead-based paints were banned for use in housing in 1978.

However, approximately 24 million housing units in the United States have deteriorated leaded paint and elevated levels of lead-contaminated house dust. More than 4 million of these dwellings are homes to one or more young children. Lead poisoning attacks the nervous system, causes weakness in the extremities, and damages the brain and kidneys.

MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether) is a chemical compound that is manufactured by the chemical reaction of methanol and isobutylene. MTBE is produced in very large quantities (over 200,000 barrels per day in the U.S. in 1999) and is almost exclusively used as a fuel additive in motor gasoline. Dangers arise from MTBE when it contaminates ground water reservoirs and well systems through leaking storage tanks and pipelines. The Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Water has concluded that available data supports the conclusion that MTBE is a potential human carcinogen at high doses.

Weitz and Luxenberg has a successful track record in trying environmental contamination cases and has a dedicated team of lawyers and client relations specialists in place to handle any questions or concerns potential litigants might have as to their best course of legal action. The public is invited to visit Weitz and Luxenberg’s corporate website to access the firm’s extensive Chromium, Lead Poisoning, and MTBE online resource center.

People who have been injured due to environmental contamination can contact Weitz & Luxenberg. Interested parties should call the Client Relations Department at 1 (800) 476-6070, or email clientrelations@weitzlux.com.
