More than 4 million of these dwellings are homes to one or more young children. Lead poisoning attacks the nervous system, causes weakness in the extremities, and damages the brain and kidneys.
MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether) is a chemical compound that is manufactured by the chemical reaction of methanol and isobutylene. MTBE is produced in very large quantities (over 200,000 barrels per day in the U.S. in 1999) and is almost exclusively used as a fuel additive in motor gasoline. Dangers arise from MTBE when it contaminates ground water reservoirs and well systems through leaking storage tanks and pipelines. The Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Water has concluded that available data supports the conclusion that MTBE is a potential human carcinogen at high doses.
