Chromium in Sherwood, OR - clean up agreement reached
April 10, 2007
Sherwood - According to The Oregonian, the discovery
that livestock hides and other waste from a tannery were dumped on Sherwood
farmland decades ago has led to a voluntary cleanup agreement between the state
Department of Environmental Quality and the current owner, a housing developer.
Ironwood Homes of Sherwood agreed to have the DEQ oversee cleanup of soil
contaminated with chromium and traces of mercury. The contamination is not
considered a major health threat to humans, but it harms the environment and
causes concern about the value of the property, DEQ project manager Chuck Harman
said.
