Air Pollutants from Clairton Coke Works Linked to Serious Heath Risks for Area Residents.  Get Information and Help from our Environmental Lawyers.

Weitz & Luxenberg’s environmental litigation lawyers are currently researching cases of individuals in the Clairton and Glassport areas of Pittsburgh who have been diagnosed with chronic health problems or cancer. A recent EPA environmental study on air quality in the Pittsburgh area has determined that air emissions from the Clairton Coke Works have caused high levels of nitrates, ammonia and benzene to be released into the air.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with health problems that may be linked to poor air quality in the Clairton area, please complete the form on this page to get more information about your legal options.

For decades, many generations of Pittsburgh-area families have called communities like Clairton and Glassport home. For any number of these families, their grandfathers, parents, sons and siblings have worked at the Clairton Coke Works, or owned or worked at businesses in these two communities.

Like area residents, virtually any current or former Allegheny County resident is familiar with the area and the coke processing facility, the poor air quality in the area, and the distinctive odor from the steam coming from the plant’s chimneys.

Coke Processing Air Pollution Linked to Chronic Illnesses and Cancer
In 2007, a study conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) showed that the hazardous air pollutants released into the air from the coke processing plant included dangerously high levels of nitrates, ammonia and benzene.

Exposure to these contaminants can cause those living in the area to develop any number of chronic health problems, including asthma, emphysema and an increased risk to develop cancer.

Exposure to the pollutants from the Coke Works has been linked to the frighteningly high numbers of Clairton and Glassport residents who have been diagnosed with cancer. According to a separate EPA study, Clairton residents have the third highest risk of developing cancer in the entire United States, and those living in Glassport have the fourth highest risk.

High Cancer Incidences throughout Allegheny County
A study of cancer diagnosis statistics from the National Cancer Institute shows that between 2001 and 2005, the Allegheny County average those diagnosed with cancer was 508.7 for each 1 million county residents. The Pennsylvania cancer average was 497.4 and the national average was 468.2. The types of cancer with the highest diagnosis rates were cancers of the prostrate, breast, lung, colon and bladder. In addition the county average for non-Hodgkin lymphoma and leukemia were significantly higher than state and national averages.
