The USX Clairton Works facility in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania is the largest coke processing facility in the nation.
The top three contaminants emitted from the plant in 2007 were nitrates, ammonia and benzene.
Recent news articles have indicated the area to have some of the highest cancer rates in the country.
The cancer risk for Clairton residents is at 762 in 1 million and for Glassport at 700 in 1 million: third-and fourth-highest risk rates in the nation. The average national cancer risk is 36 in 1 million, according to a government report.
In August 2009, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote an article about the air quality in Allegheny County that mentioned that U.S. Steel's coke works in Clairton--despite spending hundreds of millions of dollars to reduce air pollution over the last 20 years--remains one of the county's biggest air pollution sources.
Other studies have also identified serious concerns regarding Allegheny County air quality, including an American Lung Association ranking that placed Pittsburgh first in the nation for soot pollution and a USA Today report that found four of the seven U.S. schools most at-risk for air pollution are in Allegheny County.
