BACKGROUND:
Weitz & Luxenberg P.C. (weitzlux.com) is currently speaking with people who have been diagnosed with cancer or other serious illnesses in the Clairton and Glassport areas. The 2009 national Air Toxics Assessment report calculated the cancer risk for Clairton residents at 762 in 1 million, and for Glassport residents at 700 in 1 million, the third- and fourth-highest risk rates in the nation, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
“A report by the Allegheny County Health Department has found that the highest point source for benzene emissions in the county is Clairton Coke Works,” said Robin Greenwald, head of the Environmental and Toxic Torts unit at Weitz & Luxenberg. “For years, families in the region have experienced health problems that may be caused by their daily exposure to this pollution.”
In addition, a study of the air quality for 127,000 schools in the U.S. reflects that those in Clairton, Natrona Heights and McKees Rocks are in the top percentile for having the worst air quality in the nation.
