20 Children in a City of 6,000 Diagnosed Since 2001
Concerns about the possible environmental cancer cluster affecting children in the area came after the parents of the affected children contacted the city about the unusually high number of pediatric cancer cases in the region.
The Sandusky County Health Department (SCHD) conducted an independent investigation of the issue. They reviewed pediatric diagnosis statistics for children aged 14 and younger between the years of 1996 and 2005, and determined that the number of children and adolescents with cancer for the period was significantly higher than expected.
2000 census reports reflect that Clyde's total population was 6,064, which included 1,346 children under aged 14. The Ohio Department of Health (DOH) reports that approximately 20 children have been diagnosed with cancer since 2001.
Lack of Commonality in Cancer Cases
Even more puzzling in terms of this cancer cluster is the lack of a common type or severity of disease. In most environmental cancers, the carcinogen (cancer-causing substance) will only affect specific parts of the body. For example, those who develop cancer caused by exposure to asbestos are most often affected by mesothelioma cancer or other forms of lung cancer. In the Clyde cases, there is no clear link to cancers affecting a particular organ or system.
If a child in your family or a loved one’s family has been affected by cancer cluster in Clyde, Ohio, our environmental attorneys may be able to help.
