Clyde, Ohio Residents Are Concerned: Children from Community Diagnosed With Cancer
Weitz & Luxenberg is investigating this tragic situation and may be able to help affected families.
Families living in the small community of Clyde, Ohio have been trying for a number of years to get information and answers as to the cause for the unusually high number of children born in the area that have developed cancer.
The statistics for pediatric cancer (children aged 14 years and younger) in Clyde are much higher than other areas in the country. With an aggregate population of approximately 6,000 individuals, 20 children have developed cancer since 2001.
State Investigation
Since the Ohio Department of Health (DOH) first began to investigate the issue, they discovered the highest diagnosis levels occurred between 2005 and 2006, leading the DOH to speculate the possible cancer cluster was linked to an environmental problem that may no longer be affecting the community in the same manner.
The DOH sampled a number of sources of drinking water in the area, which were tested for potentially harmful chemicals, herbicides, pesticides and organic minerals that could be harmful if ingested in higher than EPA approved standards. While the testing showed some compounds were present in higher than normal levels, the study did not point to a definitive source that would have triggered environmental cancers.
The DOH is currently conducting a study of medical data for similar health problems that may have occurred in the families of the affected children. The information to be studied includes data regarding complications during pregnancy, incidences of miscarriage, premature births, low birth weights, birth injury or defects and other health problems. The results of this report are expected to be released to the public in October 2009.
