Children and Teenagers in Clyde, Ohio Region Were Exposed to Unknown Carcinogen: Possible Cancer Cluster in Sandusky County

For approximately 10 years, families in Clyde, Ohio have been aware of a frightening trend: the number of children that have fallen victim to a variety of cancers. The number of pediatric cancer patients in the area is higher than other areas of the country.

In 2008, over 10,000 children aged 14 and younger in the U.S. were diagnosed with a form of cancer. Trends in the small city of Clyde indicate the number of pediatric cancer diagnoses is inconsistent with national statistics.

Epidemiologists (scientists who study the causes, distribution, and control of disease in populations) for the Ohio Department of Health (DOH) have been studying the pediatric cancer cluster, and the probability that it is linked to an environmental problem.

The DOH also noted that while the diagnosis levels peaked in 2005-2006, that trend has not repeated, giving credence to the possibility that the environmental trigger may have been of a limited nature.

Water Study
To that end, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) undertook a comprehensive study of drinking water in the area during January 2009, studying samples from both the public water systems and domestic water wells.

Of note was the presence of elevated levels of the organic mineral strontium, which is present in northern Ohio bedrock. The EPA’s health advisory range for the mineral is 25,000 parts per billion (PPB) in children, and testing reflected levels ranging from 16,600 to 47,440 ppb.

While the levels are higher than advisory standards, the Ohio EPA did not conclude that strontium was the cause of the problem.
