For several years, families in the Sandusky County city of Clyde have been justifiably worried about the number of school-age children who had been affected by cancer. With a total aggregate population of 1,600, the city has seen 20 area children diagnosed with cancer since 2001.
The Investigation
When the Ohio Department of Health began investigating the issue, they noted that a spike in pediatric cancers that occurred between 2005 and 2006 has not been duplicated; leading state investigators to believe the cancer cluster was caused by an environmental trigger.
Investigators also studied health records for children aged 19 and younger in Sandusky County and other areas of the state, but the research has shown the cancer cluster is centered on the small, five to seven mile are in Clyde.
The Ohio Department of Health (DOH) conducted a comprehensive study of drinking water in January and February of 2009. That study, which was released in May 2009, showed that strontium, a mineral that occurs naturally in the bedrock in northwest Ohio, was at higher than EPA advisory levels. However, the DOH does not believe strontium exposure is the cause of the possible cancer cluster.
