On August 24, 2009, Advanced Bionics issued the following information about certain defective or failed cochlear implants to surgeons, patients and their guardians:
Advanced Bionics has become aware of sixteen (16) HiRes 90 K Cochlear Implants that have an issue related to the internal magnet.
These devices were made with an internal magnet where the metal case surrounding the magnet was not properly welded.
All of these devices were manufactured between May 27, 2005 and June 30, 2005.
Patients whose device contains an improperly welded magnet have experienced a decrease in the strength of the magnet over time, leading to headpiece retention issues.
Patients experiencing headpiece retention issues mayrequire magnet revision surgery to correct this problem.
We believe it is prudent to inform you of this issue so that you can notify your patients.
