The More Harmful the Concussion, The Higher the Grade - Learn More
Concussion is classified into five grades:
Grade I is the
mildest, involving only confusion.
Grade II involves anterograde
amnesia that lasts less than five minutes as well as confusion,
and Grade
III involves those symptoms plus retrograde amnesia and unconsciousness for
less than five minutes.
Grade IV and Grade V include those
symptoms with unconsciousness that lasts between 5 and 10 minutes and longer
than 10 minutes respectively.
The AAN guidelines state that
permanent brain injury can occur with either Grade 2 or Grade 3 concussion.
Consequently, there is no doubt that subtle brain injury can have permanent consequences if
the acute symptoms of the concussion persist for more than 15 minutes.
