Treatments for Those Who Have Suffered a Concussion
The first step in treatment for someone with a concussion is to monitor them
closely for any change in level of consciousness. They may need to be
hospitalized. While headache and dizziness are common, if it persists and
becomes severe, it is best to seek medical attention.
In some cases,
post-concussion syndrome may occur, involving persistent headache, dizziness,
irritability, memory changes and vision changes. People with post-concussion
syndrome may seem overly emotional or unable to control their emotions,
experience unexplained depression, or have difficulty
concentrating/thinking/planning ahead. Symptoms may begin weeks or even months
after the initial injury. Often, the problem will resolve itself, but when they
don't, it may be necessary to have a rehabilitation specialist to oversee a
program for recovery.
While recovery can be a slow process, it is
important to remember that sufficient sleep and nutrition are vital. If major
changes do occur, it is best to contact your doctor.
