Two construction workers injured at Wisconsin dam site
October 16, 2008 -- Two construction workers were injured during an industrial accident late yesterday afternoon at a hydro plant on the Chippewa River in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Construction equipment fell on employees of a local company who were outside the plant on a walkway above the river. Both men were taken to a hospital, one with injuries to his leg and the other to his chest. They are expected to survive.
According to an AP report, a portable hydraulic lifting device the workers were using collapsed while moving a large piece of equipment. When the device collapsed, a piece of it hit an acetylene tank and started a small fire. There was no structural damage to the dam.
Construction industry fatalities
Though the fatality rate in the construction industry declined last year to 1,178 (from 1,239 in 2006), the construction industry experiences more fatalities per work event than any industry in the private sector, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
The events most frequently leading to construction worker fatalities from 1995 through 1999 were: falls (33%), transportation incidents (20%), contact with objects or equipment (19%), and exposure to harmful substances and environments (17%).
