ACCIDENTS & INJURIES
Construction industry fatality rate, by work event
October 8, 2008 -- Each day in the United States, more than 11 million men and women go to work in the complex and changing industry that builds, repairs and maintains the structures we all inhabit. That is the construction industry.
Though the construction industry fatality rate declined last year to 1,178 (from 1,239 in 2006), the construction industry experiences more fatalities per work event than any industry in the private sector, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
Fatality rate by work event
The events most frequently leading to work-related fatalities in construction from 1995 through 1999 were falls (33%), transportation incidents (20%), contact with objects or equipment (19%), and exposure to harmful substances and environments (17%).
Each event type accounted for a similar proportion of construction occupational fatalities in 2006.
