ACCIDENTS & INJURIES
Construction industry fatality rate, by occupation

October 8, 2008 -- Each day in the United States, more than 11 million men and women go to work in the complex and changing industry that builds, repairs and maintains the structures we all inhabit. That is the construction industry.

Though the construction industry fatality rate declined in 2007 to 1,178 (from 1,239 in 2006), the construction industry experiences more fatalities than any industry in the private sector, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Fatality rate by occupation

Two occupational groups (construction and extraction occupations and transportation and material moving occupations) together accounted for nearly half of all fatal work injuries in 2006 (48 percent).

Construction and extraction worker fatalities rose 6 percent in 2006, to 1,258, from 1,184 in 2005. Construction laborers accounted for the highest number of fatal work injuries among construction and extraction occupations, accounting for 360 fatal work injuries, up 5 percent from 2005.

Fatalities among electricians, roofers, painters, and drywall and ceiling tile installers also rose. Fatalities decreased among carpenters, construction trade helpers, and among plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters.
