Indianapolis highway construction accident injures worker
October 16, 2008 -- A highway construction worker was seriously injured in an accident on Indianapolis’ west side early this morning.
Indiana State Police said the accident happened at about 2 a.m. at Interstate 465 and Rockville Road, where workers are cutting down beams at an old overpass. The injured worker was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he is expected to recover.
According to reports, the accident forced the closure of I-465 for a short time. Northbound interstate traffic remains slow in that area because of continuing construction.
Construction industry fatality rate
Though the fatality rate in the construction industry declined last year to 1,178 (from 1,239 in 2006), the construction industry experiences more fatalities per work event than any industry in the private sector, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
The events most frequently leading to construction worker fatalities from 1995 through 1999 were: falls (33%), transportation incidents (20%), contact with objects or equipment (19%), and exposure to harmful substances and environments (17%).
