NEW YORK CITY CONSTRUCTION
NYC construction industry downshifts as employment and safety difficulties rise

October 17, 2008 – The New York City construction industry is on a paved road toward employment and safety problems, as job cuts, mounting safety violations and a stale economy hammer away at industry growth.

According to a NYC report released yesterday by the New York Building Congress, the city’s construction industry set a record this year with 130,100 jobs – but by 2010 the industry is expected to shed some 30,000 of these positions as the economy weakens.

Safety violations, another concern

This prognosis comes on the heals of a recent Department of Labor report identifying fall hazards as the biggest safety problem at construction sites in New York. According to preliminary statistics, 24 construction workers died in the city in 2007. Of those, 14 died from falls.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration this year fined 46 construction sites in the city for 129 safety violations totaling $247,400. Nearly a third of the violations involved fall hazards.
