New York City construction sites fined for 129 safety violations
October 15, 2008 – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) this year fined 46 construction sites in the city for safety violations. Nearly a third of the violations involved fall hazards.
Fall hazards are the biggest safety problem in the New York City construction industry. According to preliminary statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor, 24 construction workers died in the city in 2007. Of those, 14 died from falls.
OSHA has issued $247,400 in fines at 46 sites. The inspectors cited 60 contractors with 129 safety violations. Nearly a third of the violations involved fall hazards.
