NY CONSTRUCTION WORKER FATALITY
Trench collapse buries young workman at upstate New York site
October 21, 2008 -- A 20-year-old construction worker from Fiske Construction Co., a firm based in Lenox, Mass., became buried when a trench he was excavating at 3 Chapel Woods Road in Clifton Park, NY, collapsed on him sometime around noon yesterday.
A spokesman for the Saratoga County Sheriff's Department said the body was removed at 7:20 p.m. and taken from the scene by funeral home personnel. Police did not immediately release the man's name, but did say that he is not from New York State.
“He was in over his head,” the spokesman told reporters, adding that the ditch was 2 to 3 feet wide and between 64 and 96 inches deep, dug into ground composed of soil, sand and clay. The ditch had been dug to lay drain pipes in preparation for an expansion of the home at this site.
Construction industry dangers
Though the fatality rate in the construction industry declined in 2007 to 1,178 (from 1,239 in 2006), the construction industry experiences more fatalities per work event than any industry in the private sector, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
