Two construction workers crushed to death on New Jersey (NJ) Turnpike
October 16, 2008 -- Two construction workers are dead after a Brooklyn man driving an SUV fell asleep at the wheel and crushed them into the back of a dump truck shortly after midnight yesterday on the New Jersey (NJ) Turnpike in Elizabeth.
Twenty-eight-year-old Steven Sprague, of Toms River, and 20-year-old Richard Brady, of Neptune, were pronounced dead at the scene. No charges have been filed against the Brooklyn resident.
“Twenty percent of all construction worker fatalities in the country are attributed to transportation accidents,” said a car accident attorney at Weitz & Luxenberg.
Construction accident statistics
Though the fatality rate in the construction industry declined last year to 1,178 (from 1,239 in 2006), the construction industry experiences more fatalities per work event than any industry in the private sector, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
The events most frequently leading to construction worker fatalities from 1995 through 1999 were: falls (33%), transportation incidents (20%), contact with objects or equipment (19%), and exposure to harmful substances and environments (17%).
