Falling concrete slab injures three Toronto construction workers at work site
October 24, 2008 -- Three Toronto construction workers were injured when a concrete form fell on them Tuesday morning at a work site on Fleet St.
One worker was treated for minor injuries and released. The other two are currently hospitalized in stable condition, including a 25-year-old workman who was conscious and breathing with severe back pains before being taken to a hospital, police said.
"The wind caught the concrete form and blew it over on top of three workers who were working nearby," a spokesman for the Ministry of Labour told reporters. Each concrete form is approximately 25 to 30 feet long.
Construction industry mortality rate
Events that most frequently lead to construction worker fatalities include: falls (33%), transportation incidents (20%), contact with objects or equipment (19%), and exposure to harmful substances and environments (17%).
Though the fatality rate in the construction industry declined in 2007 to 1,178 (from 1,239 in 2006), the industry experiences more fatalities per work event than any industry in the private sector, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
