Former construction workers at the Hanford nuclear reservation in Washington have an increased risk of certain cancers, according to a new study published in the September 2009 issue of the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, the Associated Press reported.
The study showed that Hanford workers were 11 times more likely than the general population to develop mesothelioma cancer, which is caused by asbestos exposure.
According to the study, they were three times more likely to develop multiple myeloma, a cancer found in white blood cells, the AP reported.
The study reviewed 8,976 workers who had participated in the building trades screening program at the four sites and had an initial screening interview between 1998 and 2004.
It found that about 31 percent of the people - 2,779 workers - had done construction work at Hanford, and 94 of the 266 Hanford workers who had died had died of cancer.
That is 14 more cancer deaths than would be expected in the general U.S. population, the study found.
Thousands of construction workers have died from diseases caused by work with—or near—asbestos without protection, according to OSHA.
And the agency reported that 10,000 people are expected to die each year for the next 10 years because of past exposures to asbestos.
Many construction workers have come forward to say their work environment led to a diagnosis of mesothelioma, asbestosis or lung cancer from asbestos.
