In October 2008, the Division of Nephrology, Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN, discovered a link between gadolinium based contrast dyes and the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis--a rare but serious skin and joint disease--in patients with chronic kidney disease or acute kidney injury.
