Crane safety conference meets after deadly accidents kill 9 in New York City this year
October 21, 2008 -- Crane safety experts from around the country are meeting at a conference in New York City to discuss the adoption of new national safety standards following several deadly crane accidents in 2008.
Eight people died in two crane collapses earlier this year in Manhattan; and another worker died just last month when he fell from a 40-story tower crane platform at 600 West 42nd Street. Other crane accidents have claimed lives in Florida, Texas and Las Vegas.
City and industry officials attending the New York City crane safety conference are discussing the possibility of creating a new national testing system for crane operators and a national system that can track crane parts.
Construction industry dangers
Though the fatality rate in the construction industry declined in 2007 to 1,178 (from 1,239 in 2006), the construction industry experiences more fatalities per work event than any industry in the private sector, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
The events most frequently leading to construction worker fatalities from 1995 through 1999 were: falls (33%), transportation incidents (20%), contact with objects or equipment (19%), and exposure to harmful substances and environments (17%).
