Crude Oil Dispersants

Numerous Health Problems Linked to Exposure to Corexit and Other Chemicals Used to Contain the BP Gulf Oil Spill Disaster

Our Gulf oil spill attorneys are currently speaking with men and women who have developed health problems after working as part of the containment and cleanup efforts after the BP oil spill.  The chemicals in crude oil, weathered crude and crude oil treated with chemical dispersants have been linked to the development of a number of serious health problems.

To obtain vital information about your legal rights to seek compensation for health injuries or financial losses caused by the oil spill, please complete the form on this page.

IMPORTANT: If your health, livelihood or property has been affected by the Gulf Coast oil spill, we urge you to seek the advice of a lawyer before signing job applications, requests for financial reimbursement or other documents. You may be signing away your legal rights to take part in a lawsuit.

In April 2010, the nation faced the largest oil-spill related disaster when an explosion and fire aboard an oil rig drilling for crude oil on behalf of BP oil.  The resulting oil spill disaster caused over 170 million gallons of toxic crude oil to spill into the Gulf of Mexico.

The oil spill caused still unknown damage to the Gulf’s ecosystem, including the contamination and destruction of underground coral, possible devastation of populations of marine life and injuries and fatalities to the region’s bird and other wildlife populations

Exposure to Chemical Dispersants
Attempts to contain and cleanup the massive crude oil spill involved the use of chemical dispersants, including a chemical known as Corexit.

Crude oil treated with Corexit or other chemical dispersants

Information from a number of official government sources, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the federal oil spill’s website express concern about potential human health risks for those who were exposed to Corexit and other chemical dispersants.

Cleanup Workers Face Potential Health Problems
In the months since the oil spill, hundreds of boat owners, commercial and leisure charter fishermen and many others assisted with the cleanup.

Workers involved with the Coast Guard Vessels of Opportunity (VOO) Program were involved in skimming, crude oil burns, laying and hauling boom and other cleanup roles.  Still other workers were involved in decontaminating boats and the cleanup of the shores, cleaning beaches and disposing of tar balls.

All of these workers were exposed to chemical contamination from crude oil and weathered crude (see photos below).  Both crude oil and weathered crude contain a number of potentially dangerous chemicals, including benzene, heavy metals and other toxins known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs).  Those exposed to crude oil, as well as those involved in weathered oil spill remediation work face the risk of developing breathing problems as well as health problems that can affect the heart and blood chemistry, the liver and kidneys, and other systems in the body.
