In April 2010, the nation faced the largest oil-spill related disaster when an explosion and fire aboard an oil rig drilling for crude oil on behalf of BP oil. The resulting oil spill disaster caused over 170 million gallons of toxic crude oil to spill into the Gulf of Mexico.
The oil spill caused still unknown damage to the Gulf’s ecosystem, including the contamination and destruction of underground coral, possible devastation of populations of marine life and injuries and fatalities to the region’s bird and other wildlife populations
Exposure to Chemical Dispersants
Attempts to contain and cleanup the massive crude oil spill involved the use of chemical dispersants, including a chemical known as Corexit.

Crude oil treated with Corexit or other chemical dispersants
Information from a number of official government sources, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the federal oil spill’s website express concern about potential human health risks for those who were exposed to Corexit and other chemical dispersants.
Cleanup Workers Face Potential Health Problems
In the months since the oil spill, hundreds of boat owners, commercial and leisure charter fishermen and many others assisted with the cleanup.
Workers involved with the Coast Guard Vessels of Opportunity (
All of these workers were exposed to chemical contamination from crude oil and weathered crude (see photos below). Both crude oil and weathered crude contain a number of potentially dangerous chemicals, including benzene, heavy metals and other toxins known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Those exposed to crude oil, as well as those involved in weathered oil spill remediation work face the risk of developing breathing problems as well as health problems that can affect the heart and blood chemistry, the liver and kidneys, and other systems in the body.
