On April 20, 2010, an explosion and fire aboard the oil rig Deepwater Horizon began what is considered to be the largest oil spill in U.S. history. The oil spill caused over 170 million gallons of crude oil to contaminate the Gulf of Mexico.
Remediation and Cleanup Workers Exposed
Thousands of men and women worked to help contain the BP oil spill and clean up beaches, wetlands and shores contaminated by tar balls and oil that reached the shores.
Those workers included the crews on ships that helped to lay boom in the Gulf, those that cleaned up sand contaminated by weathered oil and tar; workers involved in weathered oil spill remediation, and those who sprayed chemical dispersants to decontaminate boats.
