Ending the silence FDA moves to warn patients of drugs' possible side effects

Oden, 56, a peppery former civil rights activist, began campaigning for easier patient access to drug safety information after her pregnant daughter died in 2001 during labor induced by a drug called Cytotec. The drug, which is approved by regulators to prevent ulcers, is not approved for inducing labor. Oden says her 32-year-old daughter, Tatia Oden French, was not told that this "off-label" use carried a risk that her uterus could rupture.
