According to a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, an estimated 36 people in the United States wear either complete or partial removable dentures. While some who are fitted with dentures experience no problems, many men and women use denture adhesives to help keep dentures in place.

However, for many men and women who experience chronic fit problems and reapply adhesive throughout the day have developed zinc poisoning (known as hyperzincemia). The most serious side-effect from zinc poisoning is known as hypocupremia, or copper deficiency.

When the levels of these two minerals are at abnormal levels, a number of serious nerve disorders, body chemistry and metabolism disorders can occur. Because copper is needed to help the body absorb iron, copper deficiency is known to cause anemia, general weakness, impaired respiratory functions and other serious conditions that can occur when normal body chemistry levels are affected.

Hundreds of people are suing consumer products giants Procter & Gamble Co., which makes Fixodent, and GlaxoSmithKline, maker of PoliGrip, the Associated Press reported in an article on September 18, 2009.

According the report, the lawsuits claim the denture cream products are defective, that the companies failed to adequately warn people about the potential dangers and that no corrective steps were taken.
