Denture Cream Products Linked to Serious Neurological Conditions: Zinc Overdose and Copper Deficiency

If you or a loved one used Fixodent or PoliGrip denture cream products and has developed neurological problems or blood deficiencies caused by zinc overdose, contact our lawyers today for a review of your denture adhesive lawsuit.

According to studies of consumer spending, almost 33% of Americans who wear either full or partial fitted dentures purchase and use denture cream products. In the U.S. well over $200 million is spent each year on denture creams.

Many who suffer from badly fitting dentures use the adhesive creams to keep the appliances secure, and apply additional adhesive during the day. However, because these products contain zinc, these men and women were unaware that overuse of the adhesive could cause serious health problems.

Am I at Risk for Zinc Overdose?
Those who use zinc-based denture adhesive creams such as PoliGrip and Fixodent to help to keep their denture devices in place are at risk.

In particular, those who have dentures that do not fit well and use the adhesive several times each day may be at risk for zinc poisoning (hyperzincemia).

When denture cream-related hyperzincemia occurs, it can cause significant problems with both body chemistry and metabolism. The most serious problem caused by zinc overdose is caused by high levels of zinc interfering with the body’s ability to properly absorb copper.

Copper deficiency (hypocupremia) can have serious, life-threatening side effects. Since copper is necessary to help the body absorb iron, copper deficiency can cause serious blood disorders, including anemia. It can also put those affected at increased risk for stroke, cardiovascular disease and thyroid disorders.

In addition, since copper is vital for the production of collagen, it can effect bone health, cause gum disease and significant degeneration of gum tissue, cause problems with muscle strength, and even prevent cuts and other injuries from healing.
