In August 2010, the orthopedic device company DePuy Orthopaedics announced the recall of two hip replacement component systems. The company, which is headquartered in Warsaw, Indiana, announced the recall of two DePuy devices: the ASR XL acetabular system and the DePuy ASR hip resurfacing system.
According to information released by DePuy, all components of the ASR and ASR XL devices are subject to the DePuy hip recall.
Medical Study of High Failure Rates
A 2010 report from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales (NJR) of the DePuy hip devices has shown that patients who received these metal-on-metal devices faced a twelve to thirteen percent risk of needing surgery to correct problems with the devices.
Patients who develop problems with their DePuy hip implant devices may require revision surgery (where the surfaces of the implants are surgically repaired) or replacement surgery (when the hip components are removed and replaced by new devices).
Both of these procedures require painful post-surgical rehabilitation to restore strength and mobility many years before the hip components would normally require additional surgical treatment.
Problems with the Two DePuy Devices
The devices subject to the DePuy hip implant recall have been on the market since 2003, while the ASR XL hip components have been marketed since 2004.
Patients may first become aware of problems with their DePuy hip system implants when they begin to experience discomfort similar to the pain they experienced prior to undergoing surgery. They may also begin to have problems walking, climbing up and down stairs, getting in and out of cars and chairs and other debilitating mobility problems.
The pain, stiffness and mobility problems may be indicating a number of device failure issues such as hip implant failure problems caused by the loosening of the hip implant components, from a fracture in the bones surrounding the implant, or if the hip implant dislocates.
