Metallosis caused by DePuy hip replacement products

What is Metallosis?

Metallosis is when metal bits and shavings find their way into the soft tissue of the area surrounding the hip joint. A common cause of this is a defective metal-backed polyethylene joint prosthesis, such as the variousDePuy hip implants. The immune system will usually identify the metal ions as foreign agents, but the ions can still cause significant soft tissue damage.

Symptoms associated with Metallosis include:

  • Metal poisoning
  • Synovitis (inflammation in the joints)
  • Intense pain
  • Pseudotumors

Any one of the symptoms listed above can be serious enough to cause long-term damage or inhibit your ability to work.

How do the DePuy hip implant products cause Metallosis?

Twelve to thirteen percent of DePuy hip implants (which are partially made of metal) can cause the condition.

In a December, 2010 article of Lawyers and Settlements, Heidi Turner reported the following about DePuy hip replacement and its link to Metallosis:

“Metal shavings—known as debris—can come loose from the DePuy hip device and be absorbed by surrounding tissue. The condition, known as Metallosis can cause the surrounding tissue to die, which can also lead to failure of the hip implant.” (Lawyers and Settlements)

What can be done?

Those who have been negatively affected by the DePuy hip devices have the right to seek compensation for:

  • Any income lost
  • Future earnings lost
  • Any out-of-pocket expenses
  •  Any help hired related to the incident
