On August 20, 2010, pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson announced that their orthopedics unit, DePuy Orthopaedics, was recalling the company’s ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing devices.
According to a company spokesman, approximately 93,000 patients had received the defective hip implant devices subject to the DePuy hip recall.
High Failure Rates
According to data compiled by the National Joint Registry of England and Wales, patients who received the ASR hip devices faced higher than average risk rates for revision and replacement surgeries.
The study showed that between 12 and 13 percent of patients who had received either the ASR or ASR XL hip components required replacement surgeries within five years of implantation. The study also indicated that women were more likely than man to require revision or replacement.
