For more than six years, Johnson & Johnson’s orthopedic device unit, Indiana based DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc., has been marketing two hip replacement devices. The two DePuy hip implants, known as the DePuy ASR acetabular system and the ASR XL hip resurfacing system, were recalled in August 2010 after the company reviewed the results of a UK study of the devices and higher than normal revision and replacement rates.
National Joint Registry of England and Wales Report
The recall of the DePuy ASR and ASR XL devices was prompted after DePuy reviewed the results of a National Joint Registry (NJR) study of the two DePuy devices. That study reflected that a higher than average percentage of patients who received the DePuy devices subsequently required follow-up surgeries to correct flaws in the ASR metal-on-metal hip components.
The NJR study not only showed that 12-13 percent of patients required either revision or hip replacement surgical procedures, but that women faced an even higher risk rate for revision surgeries.
DePuy Hip Implant Injuries
Patients who received the defective DePuy hip replacement devices may experience swelling, pain and mobility problems that cause problems when walking up and down steps or climbing in and out of a car.
These symptoms can mean that the hip implants have dislocated or loosened. In more serious injuries, the bones surrounding the healed implant may fracture.
These patients will then have to undergo additional surgeries to either correct the defect or have a new device implanted. As with their original surgery, these men and women will experience significant pain from their surgery, recovery and rehabilitation.
