DIAGNOSED WITH MESOTHELIOMA
Have you been diagnosed with asbestos-related mesothelioma cancer? Would you like to explore your legal options?
October 21, 2010 – Thousands of retirement-aged workers, from such industries as construction, automobile and Naval shipyard repair, are caught off guard every year when they are told the work they did decades ago has today resulted in them being diagnosed with mesothelioma, the most lethal of asbestos-related cancers.
Mesothelioma is a relatively rare form of cancer with about 2,500 to 3,000 individuals being diagnosed each year in the United States. Though rare by comparison to other cancers, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control say the number of mesothelioma cases will peak this year.
That’s due to a long mesothelioma latency period before diagnosable symptoms appear; sometimes up to 50 years after worksite exposure. Also, cases are expected to peak at this time because asbestos health regulations enacted in the mid-1980s will soon help to taper off new cases of individuals being diagnosed with mesothelioma.
The mesothelioma prognosis is poor. Patients rarely live more than two years after a diagnosis.
The disease results from occupational asbestos exposure, commonly caused by the negligence of employers and asbestos product manufacturers who knew of the health dangers of their products, but deliberately disqualified the expense of maintaining a safe working environment in exchange for greater profits.

In 2008, our attorneys obtained for a client $16 million in a lawsuit involving the first successful asbestos verdict against a dental supply company responsible for manufacturing asbestos-containing dental tape. As these verdicts show, courts recognize the culpability of employers and product manufacturers who put corporate profits ahead of the expense of providing a safe worksite.
