EPA plans on-site cleanup

August 18, 2005  (pensacolanewsjournal.com)

On Wednesday, the federal Environmental Protection Agency released a proposal for soil cleanup at the Escambia Treating Co. Superfund site at a cost of $25 million. The residents of about 50 homes will be given the option to move from an area near the former wood-treating facility.

The plan, which is subject to public comment, calls for the on-site burial of "Mount Dioxin," plus an additional 300,000 or more cubic yards of contaminated soil on- and off-site.

Soil samples reveal high levels of dioxin along Tittabawassee River

August 13, 2005 (freep.com)

SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) -- The majority of the soil samples taken by Dow Chemical Co. from along the Tittabawassee River show dioxin levels higher than what the government considers safe, officials said.

The recently released results of the sampling show dioxin levels as high as 8,700 parts per trillion at a location in Midland and 8,200 parts per trillion at a park in Saginaw County's Saginaw Township.

New class-action likely to consolidate with ongoing suit

August 10th, 2005 (mlive.com)

Dow Chemical Co. is the target of another class-action lawsuit that demands reparations for decades of dioxin contamination downstream of its Midland plant.

Riverside residents Howard and Barbara Steinmetz have filed suit against the chemical giant, claiming that Dow diminished their property values and caused them physical and emotional grief because of historic dioxin releases into the Tittabawassee River.
