The Use of the Drug Reglan (Metoclopramide) Has Been Linked to Serious Side Effects, Including Tardive Dyskinesia

Our lawyers are currently investigating cases of men and women who were prescribed the drug Reglan to treat gastrointestinal disorders who later developed a debilitating movement disorder known as tardive dyskinesia.

If you or a loved one has been injured after taking Reglan, please complete the form on this page for important information about your legal options.

In September 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued information regarding the use of Reglan (Metoclopramide). The drug, which is prescribed to patients with gastrointestinal problems, including:

  • For the relief of symptoms in diabetes patients who experience slow stomach emptying;
  • To reduce nausea and vomiting that cancer chemotherapy patients experience as a side effect of their treatment; and
  • To help to prevent post-surgical nausea and vomiting that many surgical patients experience when they awaken from a procedure that requires general sedation.

    The new warnings, which are part of the FDA’s Approved Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) warns of a serious side effect linked to the medication: tardive dyskinesia (TD).

    Tardive Dyskinesia Side Effects
    According to the September 2009 patient prescribing information on the FDA Web site, patients taking Reglan can develop abnormal muscle movements that are classified as tardive dyskinesia, or TD.

    The uncontrollable movements typically involve the facial muscles, and TD patients will experience uncontrolled facial movements including:

  • Lip smacking, chewing, or puckering up of the mouth;
  • frowning or scowling;
  • Sticking out one’s tongue; and
  • Blinking and moving of the eyes.

    In addition, TD patients also experience uncontrolled shaking in their arms and legs.

    While TD symptoms and side effects lessen or go away after discontinuing Reglan, the untreatable condition may not go away or stop after taking the drug.
