Astrazeneca Makes Push For Seroquel XR After Two Major Setbacks

The International Business Times has reported that drugmaker AstraZeneca is hoping to boost its range of drugs, but suffered two recent high-profile failures of two new drugs for stroke and heart disease.

Those setbacks, the Times says, followed earlier setbacks.

The company is hoping its newly approved once-daily version of Seroquel, Seroquel XR, will break its steady stream of failures.

Seroquel (quetiapine fumarate), an atypical antipsychotic, is marketed as a treatment for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

However, it is often prescribed for anxiety and sleep disorders.

Though used to mitigate such health issues, the drug has been linked to the development of diabetes, a debilitating, deadly disease.
