Learn More About the Danger of the Kugel Patch Hernia Repair Device
The Kugel Mesh Patch, used in hernia repair, was recalled because of a faulty part that has been reported to severely damage internal organs.
The patch is used to fix ventral (incisional) hernias, which are caused by stretching or thinning of scar tissue that forms after surgery according to the FDA. The patch is placed in the body through a small incision behind the hernia. This patch is then held open by a “memory recoil ring” which allows the patch to be folded over for insertion and later spring open and lay flat once it is in place.
The recall of this patch is due to a faulty recoil ring. Studies show that this ring can snap under pressure from other muscles. The result is bowel perforations and/or chronic intestinal fistulae (abnormal connections or passageways between the intestines and other organs).
