Thousands of patients with Parkinson's disease trusted Permax (pergolide),
only to find that the drug has been linked to heart valve damage.
There
are reported incidences of patients who will need to have their heart valves
replaced because they took Permax.
Trouble regarding Permax surfaced in
2002 after some reports of heart valve problems. Label warnings were
subsequently added.
Then, in 2006, a boxed warning was added to the
labeling for Permax. It cautioned patients on the risk of serious heart valve
damage.
Recent studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine
reported high rates of heart valve leakage in patients taking the
drug.
Those alarming reports, in part, led to the drug being pulled from
the market.
Weitz & Luxenberg is no longer accepting Permax cases.
