Elevator Types: the Dumbwaiter
A dumbwaiter is a small kitchen elevator used in all types of kitchens, both in the home and commercial, for the transport of food and utensils between the different floors of an establishment.
Dumbwaiters are basic in design, and use a pulley system with a counterweight at the other end. They are either pulled by hand, or driven by an electric motor. There is a limit to how much the maximum load of a dumbwaiter can be (usually around 750 lbs). Since it is a type of elevator, all dumbwaiters must comply with all proper elevator and building codes.
